In Plants vs. Zombies, players plays with different types of the plants and fungi, means each with their own unique offensive or defensive capabilities, around the house, in order to stop the horde of the zombies from reaching a house of the residents. The playing field is only divided into 5 to 6 horizontal lanes, and with the rare exceptions, a zombie will move towards the player's house along one lane (in the straight lane). Which can be gathered for free during the daytime levels and by planting certain the plants or fungi. Most of the plants can only attack or defend against the zombies in the lane they are planted in. In the later levels, players can purchase the upgrades with different offensive and defensive abilities.The game uses the several different level types and the layouts. The game starts out in the front yard, and progresses to the night time levels, where the game play is more challenging and without any replenishing sun unless the specific plants are used.
